Lisa (Debra Winger) and her husband Robert (Richard Jenkins) are masters of deception, having spent their lives conning others. After having a child, Ode (Evan Rachel Wood), the couple naturally wants to raise her to be as talented a "professional" as they are. 26 years have passed in the blink of an eye, and Ode has grown into a poised beauty, meanwhile acquiring various dazzling con techniques from her parents. However, deep down, she understands that their current life is not normal, leading her to yearn for ordinary familial love even more. One day, a colleague named Melanie (Gina Rodriguez) joins Lisa and Robert's family, and her presence opens a new world for Lisa; she is like a boulder thrown into a calm lake.
