In the western region of China, amidst swirling yellow sands, horses wail and people are furious. A young boy, Haige (played by Gao Wei), who has practiced the Guanxi Wuji Knife Technique under his father's guidance since childhood, comes to Shuangqi Town to find his betrothed, Haomei (played by Zhao Mana), as per his father's last wishes. However, he finds the human relationships are cold and the world is harsh, as Haomei and her father, the cripple (played by Chang Jiang), show no kindness towards him. With no hope for marriage, Haige can only take a temporary job as a clerk in the cripple's shop. One day, the bandit Er Ye attempts to assault Haomei but ends up being killed by Haige. This act angers the notorious bandit leader, Yi Dao Xian (played by Sun Haiying), who has long held sway over Shuangqi Town. Thus, a storm of blades and bloodshed ensues amidst the billowing sands... This film won the Best Art Award at the 1991 Golden Rooster Awards, the Best Film Award at the 1992 Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival in Tokyo, the Outstanding Mainland Film Award at the 1992 Fifth "China Times" Film Awards in the commercial screening category, and the International Critic's Award at the 1993 Berlin Film Festival.
