Directed by the great filmmaker Yan Jun, this cautionary tale is adapted from Pu Songling's "Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio." It tells the story of the talented woman Liansuo (played by Li Jing), who accidentally kills a villain while trying to save her father, and subsequently jumps into a well to end her life. Over a decade later, the talented scholar Yang Yuwei (Li Lihua) escapes from the pursuit of a treacherous minister and seeks refuge with his father's old friend, Tang Shangshu (Jing Miao). However, Tang Shangshu is sycophantic and refuses to take him in. Fortunately, the loyal old servant Li Gui (Gu Wenzong) helps Yuwei hide in an abandoned study. By chance, Yuwei meets Liansuo at night, and they fall into a romantic tale of love between a human and a ghost. Tang Shangshu’s adopted daughter, Lianhui (also played by Li Jing), is actually Liansuo's biological sister and is already betrothed to Yuwei. Consumed by jealousy over her deceased sister, Lianhui deceives Yuwei and orders her servants to set fire to the study, but she inadvertently falls to her death. Liansuo borrows her sister’s corpse to return to life, ultimately uniting with Yuwei. This film features the superstar Li Lihua in a gender-bending role as the male lead, while the "Asian Film Queen" Li Jing impressively portrays both Liansuo and Lianhui, one righteous and one evil, one living and one ghostly.
