Anwar El-Ibrahimi (Omar Metwally), an Egyptian-American, immigrated to the United States about twenty years ago and built a life with the beautiful American woman Isabella Fields (Reese Witherspoon). They have a loving marriage and a son, and Isabella is pregnant with their second child. One day, Anwar El-Ibrahimi returns from a business trip in South Africa and is taken away at Washington Airport by mysterious men in black. The CIA suspects Anwar, a chemical engineer, is a terrorist and wants to extract useful information from him. Unfortunately, Anwar is "extradited" to Cairo, Egypt, where he is interrogated by CIA agent Douglas Freeman (Jake Gyllenhaal) and a cunning local agent. Meanwhile, Isabella, who is six months pregnant, firmly believes her husband is innocent and desperately searches for him. Although she receives help from an old flame (Peter Sarsgaard), it proves insufficient to combat the powerful state apparatus, leaving her helpless. Simultaneously, the newly inducted agent Douglas Freeman is faced with a moral dilemma as he witnesses the inhumane interrogation of Anwar by his CIA colleagues. Is Anwar a terrorist? Can Isabella reunite with her husband? What role does the novice agent Douglas Freeman play in this covert war? Answers to these questions will lead to a reevaluation of the "extraordinary rendition" policy.
