At just 21 years old, William Wilberforce (played by Ioan Gruffudd) is persuaded by his friend William Pitt (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) to join the British Parliament. Together, they lead the anti-slavery movement, engaging in fierce struggles against their opponents. However, the bill Wilberforce drafts against the slave trade is rejected by Parliament. Exhausted by the internal conflicts within Parliament, Wilberforce becomes physically and mentally drained, suffering from colitis. In 1797, while recuperating at a friend's countryside home, he meets his admirer, Barbara Spooner (played by Romola Garai). Wilberforce shares with her the cause he is fighting for, and they fall in love and marry. Finally, in 1807, part of Wilberforce's bill is passed, and the movement against the slave trade begins to gain strength. The film is based on the real-life figure of William Wilberforce, a British politician, reformer, and advocate for the abolition of slavery, telling the story of his long struggle in the 18th century British Parliament to uphold the anti-slavery movement and battle against its opponents. The film uses computer technology to merge past footage with modern imagery, presenting an epic tale of the struggle between justice and evil.
