Adapted from the famous Dunhuang murals. In the Hexi Corridor during the Tang Dynasty, a sudden hurricane swept through, engulfing the caravan led by Persian merchant Inous. Inous was buried under the sands. Chinese painter Zhang, known for his divine brushwork, and his daughter Yingniang accidentally discovered Inous and rescued him in time. After bidding farewell to Inous, the father and daughter fell victim to robberies, and Yingniang was kidnapped by the bandit chief Dou Hu. Forced to learn arts, Yingniang grew into an outstanding performer amidst the sounds of whips and drums. Five years later, Dou Hu brought his performing troupe to the Dunhuang market, and Yingniang danced sorrowfully, earning the crowd's applause, which also caught the lustful gaze of the market official. At this time, Zhang was searching for his daughter in the market and finally reunited with Yingniang. Dou Hu produced a forged "contract of sale" to obstruct their reunion, while the market official also plotted against them due to his desire for Yingniang's beauty. Just then, Inous, who was conducting business there, stepped forward and offered a large sum to redeem Yingniang. In the Mogao Caves, Yingniang's dance inspired Zhang, leading him to create a treasured mural in Dunhuang—"The Lute Player." Inous came to visit Zhang and was astonished by the murals and sculptures in the cave. As the cave filled with a joyful atmosphere, the market official sought to take Yingniang as a singing slave, attempting to dominate her. Upon hearing the terrible news, Yingniang cried out in despair. Zhang, with a heavy heart, entrusted his daughter to Inous, letting her escape with the caravan to a foreign land. The market official's schemes failed, and he imprisoned Zhang in the Mogao Caves, forcing him to create art while shackled. One day, the governor of Hexi, along with his wife, visited the Mogao Caves and admired the exceptional art of "The Lute Player." Upon seeing Zhang shackled, he was taken aback. After learning the truth, he ordered the removal of Zhang's shackles and rewarded him with an official paintbrush. From then on, Zhang regained his freedom. Three years later, the Tang Dynasty was set to hold a diplomatic congress for 27 countries. Inous was appointed as the Persian trade envoy and was about to lead his caravan, while Yingniang was thrilled to return home with it. To express her gratitude for Inous and his family’s rescue, she gifted them the intricately embroidered artwork of "The Lute Player." Upon learning of the impending congress, Zhang hoped his daughter could return with the caravan. Suddenly, he discovered that Dou Hu and the market official were plotting to intercept the Persian caravan. Ignoring the danger, he attempted to alert the caravan but was unfortunately struck by an arrow from Dou Hu and fell on the sand dune. Inous’s caravan was ambushed, their goods stolen, and the ruthless market official threatened to kill to silence any witnesses. At a critical moment, Zhang woke up, climbed the beacon tower, and lit it. Seeing that the alarm had been raised, the market official and Dou Hu fled in panic. Inous hurried to Zhang’s side, shedding tears, while Yingniang was devastated. Before his death, Zhang entrusted the arrow from Dou Hu to Yingniang, instructing her and Inous to eliminate the corrupt official and Dou Hu... Heartbroken, Yingniang vowed to avenge her father. The 27-country congress was grandly inaugurated. The market official and Dou Hu presented the stolen gem-laden pipa to the governor of Hexi to seek rewards. Just then, Inous, disguised as an old man, asked to perform for the governor. Yingniang, veiled in brown silk, danced gracefully, garnering admiration from the guests. After her dance, Yingniang unveiled, drawing her bow at her enemies, and presented the secret arrow to the governor, recounting the theft of the envoy's documents and the harm done to her father. Enraged, the governor ordered the capture of the market official and Dou Hu, severely punishing the corrupt officials and ensuring good relations between China and foreign countries.
