Christian Clavier plays a broke detective in this film. Hired by a French minister, he investigates a terrorist organization established on Corsica by Angélo Loni (Jean Reno). Although the detective claims to know the island, he is actually clueless. Upon arriving at Corsica, mentioning Angélo Loni makes everyone look at him in fear. While searching for Angélo Loni, he is taken hostage by thugs, and amid an armed conflict occurring on the road, the police appear and foolishly take Clavier away (because there are too many thugs). However, Detective Clavier does not escape this predicament. Lured by Angéla (Caterina Murino)—Angélo's sister—he surrenders. After several pursuits by the police, Clavier is rescued. But conflicts arise among the police, as local officers clash with special forces over differing opinions. Later, under Clavier's plea for Angélo Loni and Angéla, the three are released. At this point, Angéla develops a fondness for the foolish detective and also forms a friendship with Angélo Loni. In the end, with Clavier's help, Angélo Loni is acquitted by the court. Clavier decides to stay on Corsica and leads a paradise-like life.
