Reagan Thomson (Michael Keaton) is a once-glorious Hollywood movie star who is now in his fifties. He is widely known for his role as the superhero Birdman. Now that his glory has faded, Reagan, unwilling to be forgotten, turns to Broadway, attempting to regain attention and respect by adapting Raymond Carver’s "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love." Unfortunately, reality is far from his ideals; the production is underfunded, the terrible lead actor gets hit on the head by a light, and his daughter Sam (Emma Stone), who just came out of rehab, is ready to unleash her sharp tongue. Additionally, Hollywood heartthrob Mike Shannon (Edward Norton) is brought in to save the day but often meddles with the drama that Reagan has painstakingly crafted. In this chaotic rhythm, the beleaguered production arrives at the crucial moment of its premiere...
