Brandon (played by Hilary Swank) arrives in Falls City, becoming the local heartthrob, popular among women. However, he harbors a secret – the attractive man is biologically female. His real name is Teena, who has struggled with the lack of identity as a woman. He enjoys being male and decides to start a new role and a new life in this unfamiliar city. Brandon falls in love with a local girl, Lana (played by Chloë Sevigny), and befriends her ex-boyfriend – despite their rough, alcoholic, and violent behavior, the accepted Brandon finds a sense of belonging. Life seems to be going in the direction Brandon wants until a traffic violation exposes all his secrets. Brandon is revealed to be biologically female, and although Lana forgives him, tragedy strikes. Lana's ex-boyfriend, consumed with rage, destroys Brandon in a brutal act of violence.
