Paris (Robert Cummings) and Drake (Ronald Reagan) are childhood friends. Although their personalities are vastly different, their relationship is very close. Paris falls in love with Dr. Alexander's (Claude Rains) daughter, Cassandra (Betty Field), who is kept under strict house arrest by her authoritarian father, causing her great pain. Meanwhile, the carefree Drake encounters a woman named Louise (Nancy Coleman). When Drake goes to propose to Louise, he is rejected by her family due to his flamboyant reputation. Later, Drake meets Randy (Ann Sheridan), and despite coming from a very poor background, they quickly fall in love.
