At the end of World War II, a small town in the Netherlands is covered in snow, casting a gloomy shadow over the entire city due to the war. A young boy named Michel (played by Martijn Lakemeier) and his friends go to play near the wreckage of a crashed plane, but they are caught by the stationed German soldiers. Fortunately, Michel's father, the mayor, seems to have a good relationship with the Germans, and he is quickly taken home by his father. Michel is thrilled by the arrival of his Uncle Ben, but Uncle Ben warns him not to get involved in the war. Before leaving to blow up a German ammunition depot, Dirk gives him an envelope, but during the operation, Dirk gets captured by the Germans. Later, when Michel opens the envelope, he finds a wounded British pilot named Jack hiding in the woods. Michel begins to care for him and help him escape, with assistance from his sister Erica (played by Melody Klaver), who is a nurse. After Jack recovers, several of Michel's plans to help Jack escape ultimately fail. During this time, Michel's father is killed by the Germans due to an incident involving German soldiers. Left with no other option, Michel seeks help from Uncle Ben, who is willing to assist but insists that Michel should no longer get involved. Michel watches as Uncle Ben leads Jack and his sister further away, reflecting on the events of that winter and realizing that Uncle Ben is a German spy hiding in his own home... This film is a classic of the war-adventure genre, adapted from the novel of the same name by a Dutch author. It was voted Best Film at the Rembrandt Awards held in Amsterdam in March 2009.
