"Roma Mama" (Anna Magnani) brings her sixteen-year-old son Ettore (Ettore Garofolo) from the countryside to the city. After many years apart, Ettore feels shy and frustrated to see his mother again. The mother plays music in the house and invites her son to dance the tango with her. She sells fruits and vegetables at the market in the city and always tells Ettore not to hang out with his bad friends. Ettore, through a friend, becomes infatuated with a prostitute who already has a child and sells his mother's old records to buy gifts for her. When his mother learns about this, she becomes very worried and asks a friend to seduce Ettore to make him forget the prostitute. She also helps her son find a job, and seeing him get back on track, she feels happy. At this moment, the pimp from Roma Mama's past finds her and uses her unfortunate history to extort money from her, forcing Roma Mama to reluctantly return to her old profession...
