Adventurer Ben Gates (played by Nicolas Cage) faces an even more challenging quest in his search for treasure. The death of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, has long been a mystery in American history. Investigations suggest that the assassin, John Wilkes Booth, was actually instigated by others to commit this notorious crime. During a public speech, a man named Mitch Wilkinson (played by Ed Harris) claims that Gates' grandfather was closely connected to Lincoln's death. Thus, Gates begins to investigate leads related to John Booth and discovers a book called "The National Treasure," which holds the key to answering all questions. However, only the President of the United States knows its whereabouts, and to uncover the truth, Gates takes the drastic step of kidnapping the President.
