Co-produced by Shochiku and Fuji Films, the story is based on the "Okayama Incident" that occurred in 1938. A 22-year-old youth named Mutsuo Toi from Nishikamo Village in the Tomata District of Tsuyama City, Okayama Prefecture, killed thirty people in less than two hours using a gun and a samurai sword, and eventually fled to the mountains and committed suicide by gunshot. This incident set a record for mass murder in a very short period of time in Japan and even globally.
