Mary (Maureen O'Sullivan) and Brick (Henry Fonda) are a young couple about to get married, and they have a very close relationship. Brick is a taxi driver who has spent a fortune to buy a taxi and decided to open a taxi company with his friend Joe (Alan Barkeste). On the night before Mary and Brick are set to marry, a terrible robbery occurs at the cinema, where three robbers escape in a taxi after killing a cinema employee. The police immediately start to investigate all taxi drivers in the vicinity, including Brick and Joe. However, all eleven eyewitnesses on the scene identify Brick and Joe as the robbers, leading to their imprisonment. To prove her husband's innocence, Mary tirelessly gathers evidence but faces obstruction from the police.
