The story takes place in 1960s South Korea, where a poor young man, Xu Sanguan (played by Ha Jung-woo), living in a rural village, falls in love with the village's most beautiful girl, Xu Yulan (played by Ha Ji-won). Rumor has it that Yulan is the girlfriend of a local punk, He Xiaoyong, but Sanguan, with his persistent spirit and shameless demeanor, manages to persuade his future father-in-law and successfully marries the beauty. After several years of marriage, the couple has three clever and mischievous sons, Lele1, Lele2, and Lele3, and their family life is rich and flavorful. However, Lele1 increasingly resembles He Xiaoyong, which invites gossip among the villagers, causing Xu Sanguan to feel uneasy, and his feelings for Yulan and Lele1 seem to change as a result. In an era where selling blood was common, Sanguan once exchanged his blood for money. Little did he know that in the years to come, he would have to sell blood repeatedly for his family's sake, growing pale and weak, with his life hanging by a thread... The film is adapted from Yu Hua's novel "Xu Sanguan Selling Blood."
