The story takes place in the winter of 1975. Xu Xiuyun (played by Siqin Gaowa) is abandoned by her husband Zheng Bairu. To protect her elder sister's reputation, her younger sister introduces her to potential suitors, but Xu Xiuyun resolutely rejects the marriage proposal, leaving the family perplexed. In reality, Xu Xiuyun has deep sympathy for her brother-in-law Jin Dongshui (played by Feng Enhe), who has been taking care of the child left by his deceased wife, living a life of dependence together. The county sends a work team to the village, and Zheng Bairu, knowing his time is short, approaches Xu Xiuyun in hopes of remarrying her. However, having long seen through Zheng Bairu's true nature, Xu Xiuyun firmly refuses, which infuriates him.
