Yue opera. During the Three Kingdoms period, Sun Quan and Liu Bei formed an alliance to resist Cao Cao. Liu Bei borrowed Jingzhou from Eastern Wu to rest and train his troops, which deeply worried Zhou Yu, who specially sent Lu Su to Shu to retrieve Jingzhou. Lu Su returned empty-handed, saying Liu Bei asked for a few more years of grace, promising to return it after seizing Xichuan. Zhou Yu was furious and devised a plan, personally leading 50,000 troops to Jingzhou, ostensibly to help Liu Bei seize Xichuan, but actually intending to stealthily attack Jingzhou and capture Liu Bei and Zhuge Liang. Zhuge Liang saw through Zhou Yu's scheme and decided to first show courtesy and then act with force. When Zhou Yu's troops arrived outside Jingzhou, the Han army lined up to welcome them, with Zhuge Liang personally toasting Zhou Yu. Zhou Yu threw his wine cup to the ground and ordered his soldiers to capture Zhuge Liang. Zhuge Liang explained the righteousness of the alliance against Cao, advising Zhou Yu to retreat his troops immediately. Zhou Yu ignored him and ordered the Wu army to besiege Jingzhou. A fierce battle broke out between the two armies outside the city, and Zhou Yu suffered a crushing defeat, retreating to Lu Huadang, where he fell into an ambush by Zhang Fei. Zhou Yu's horse got stuck in the mud, and he begged Zhang Fei for mercy to save his life. Zhou Yu fled in disgrace and retreated to Ba Qiu, where he died from anger and grief. Zhou Yu's wife, Xiao Qiao, was heartbroken upon hearing the news of his death. Sun Quan issued an edict to avenge Zhou Yu, and Xiao Qiao, along with the generals of Eastern Wu, demanded swift military action. Only Lu Su advised caution against Cao Cao's alliance with Liu Bei, suggesting that any military action be considered carefully. Zhuge Liang crossed the river to mourn. Zhang Zhao ordered a thousand soldiers to ambush around the mourning hall, with Xiao Qiao smashing a wine cup as the signal to capture Zhuge Liang. Upon entering the mourning hall, Zhuge Liang sensed the ambush and warned Zhao Yun to stay vigilant. He knelt before Zhou Yu's spirit tablet, crying and offering a eulogy, praising Zhou Yu's merits. Xiao Qiao attempted several times to grab a wine cup but retracted her hand under Zhao Yun's watchful gaze. Ultimately, Xiao Qiao secretly picked up a cup of wine and smashed it to the ground, but it was caught by Lu Su with his robe. Seeing Zhuge Liang lamenting the past, Xiao Qiao was deeply moved and found it hard to make a decision about life and death. Zhao Yun, sensing the situation was urgent, urged the strategist to leave, but was stopped by Zhang Zhao. Zhuge Liang explained to Zhang Zhao the greater righteousness, stating that Cao Cao had long wished to avenge the defeat at Chibi; if both families quarreled, wouldn’t it benefit the fisherman? At this moment, news came that Cao Cao led hundreds of thousands of troops and was poised to invade Jiangdong, making the situation extremely urgent. Zhang Zhao quickly apologized to Zhuge Liang and sought advice on resisting Cao Cao. Zhuge Liang reiterated: we should adhere to the agreement from Chibi, firmly uphold the alliance between Sun and Liu, and work together to resist Cao’s forces. Zhang Zhao was overjoyed and invited Zhuge Liang to the back hall to discuss strategies against Cao Cao together.
