The story takes place after the end of the Civil War. Howard (James Stewart) returns from the front lines, hoping to go back to his hometown and live a peaceful life. However, upon reaching his destination, he discovers that the land that should belong to him has already been taken by others. To reclaim the land, Howard must pay a substantial price. Without a penny to his name, Howard decides to become a bounty hunter to earn some extra cash, targeting the notorious outlaw Ben (Robert Ryan). During the process of capturing Ben, Howard meets two accomplices, Roy (Ralph Meeker) and Jesse (Millard Mitchell), who mistakenly believe Howard is a detective and willingly offer their unconditional help. However, when the three manage to capture Ben, Roy and Jesse realize Howard's true identity, leading them to demand a share of the bounty.
