Single mother Jane (Heather Locklear) lives with her two daughters, Holly (Hilary Duff) and Zoe. While Jane manages well in taking care of her daughters, her love life is a mess; she keeps starting cohabiting relationships with mediocre men, which quickly turn problematic, leading to breakups. The constant switching of boyfriends has made life difficult for the two daughters, as they constantly move from one boyfriend's house to another, and from one city to another. To achieve a normal life, Holly decides to help her mother find a reliable perfect man. When she discovers that Jane's kind-hearted colleague Lanny is pursuing her, Holly takes action. She secretly sends flowers, emails, and love letters to her mother in Lanny's name, but the naive and earnest Lanny struggles to win Jane's heart. Holly's actions escalate further, but things begin to spiral out of control.
