Fifteen-year-old Charlie (played by Charlie Plummer) lost his mother at a young age and spent his entire childhood in insecurity, resulting in an extremely introverted and timid personality. Recently, Charlie moved from Spokane, Washington, to Portland, ready to start a new life there, hoping the new environment would sweep away his previous bad luck.
At his lowest point, Charlie encounters a racehorse named Pete. The strong and gentle nature of Pete deeply captivates Charlie, prompting him to approach the horse despite others telling him that racehorses are just horses, and once they can no longer race, they face the fate of being slaughtered. After losing several races in a row, Pete's racing career is nearing its end, and unable to bear the thought of Pete dying, Charlie decides to steal him from the racetrack.
