The annual Lunar New Year is approaching, and the elderly couple of the Cheng family (Li Baotian & Zhao Lirong) living in a rural area of Northeast China are joyfully awaiting their children to return home for the celebration. Last year's reunion dinner ended unhappily, so the mother is even more hopeful for a pleasant reunion this time. Soon, the children return one after another: the eldest son (Liu Xiaoling Tong) is simple and honest, the daughter-in-law (Ding Jiali) is spicy and willful; the sister-in-law's husband (Ge You) is a wayward man who flirts outside and even forces his wife to have an abortion; the youngest son (Liang Tian) is idle and indulgent, only knowing how to ask for money; the father’s favorite second daughter initially defied her father's orders by marrying a scaffolder (Shen Junyi), and now the two of them, self-sufficient and successful in their career, return as well. Although the brothers and sisters-in-law seem to be celebrating harmoniously, each has their own secrets, and they are uncertain how this year's New Year's Eve dinner will end... Zhao Lirong won the Best Actress Award from the jury at the 4th Tokyo International Film Festival in 1990 for this film.
