Chavez (played by Harry Dean Stanton) is lost in the desolate desert of Texas and falls into a coma due to his weak physical condition. The hospital contacts his brother Walt (played by Dean Stockwell) to pick him up. After being discharged, Chavez remains silent until he sees the sign "Paris, Texas," which prompts him to finally speak. Back at his brother's house in Los Angeles, Chavez meets his son—Hunter (played by Hunter Carson), but his brother and sister-in-law are actually his foster parents. However, Hunter does not accept his suddenly reappeared father. Later, Chavez wins the child's heart in a very special way. Through conversations, Chavez learns the whereabouts of the child's biological mother—Jane (played by Nastassja Kinski). Thus, father and son embark on a journey to find the mother... The film won the Palme d'Or at the 37th Cannes Film Festival.
