Cheng Daqi (played by Huang Xiaoming), originally a young assistant in a fruit shop, joins the influential detective chief Hong Shouting (played by Sammo Hung) in Shanghai, working as a thug in a casino. He is soon recognized by Hong Shouting's wife, Ling Husheng (played by Yuan Li), who helps him rise rapidly in stature. Cheng Daqi possesses significant street smarts; he is not only brave and combative but also skilled in negotiations, willing to share benefits, often transforming conflicts into peaceful resolutions, ultimately becoming the foremost hero in Shanghai. Abao treats wealthy elites with disdain, but adores Daqi deeply. Unfortunately, she realizes that no matter how much Daqi loves and spoils her, she will always be second in his heart, as the first place belongs eternally to his childhood sweetheart, Ye Zhiqiu (played by Yuan Quan), whose whereabouts are unknown. Years later, the now middle-aged Cheng Daqi (played by Chow Yun-fat) has become a powerful figure, with his reputation and status surpassing that of his mentor Hong Shouting. Almost no one in Shanghai can rival him, but external ambitions and tyranny present his greatest challenges. At this time, the man who once saved his life, Mao Zai (played by Wu Zhenyu), has become a major spy leader with ambitious schemes and self-serving agendas, forcing Cheng Daqi to plot a "bloody escape." Just then, he unexpectedly reunites with the long-lost Ye Zhiqiu and discovers that she is now a married woman…
