Tom (played by David Strathairn) and Gail (played by Meryl Streep) are a couple whose relationship has become distant. To mend their rift, they decide to take their son Roarke (played by Joseph Mazzello) and their beloved dog on a white-water rafting adventure—Gail had previously bravely navigated the treacherous confluence known as the Iron Gloves. On their journey, they encounter Wade (played by Kevin Bacon), Terry (played by John C. Reilly), and Frank. Wade's slight manipulations lead Roarke to view him as a hero. However, Frank suddenly goes missing, and Wade and Terry reveal their true, menacing nature—they are criminals on the run after stealing a large sum of money. Wade takes Tom and Roarke hostage, threatening Gail to get them across the Iron Gloves. Tom manages to escape by chance and prepares an ambush downstream with their dog. Brave Gail faces the Iron Gloves again, this time to rescue her son. Waiting downstream, Tom and Gail unite, not just to fight but to rediscover their shared love through adversity.
