Successful lawyer Matt (played by George Clooney) has his wife fall into a coma due to an accident. Recently, the doctor informs him that her time is running out, which devastates him. At the same time, as the heir to an island in Hawaii, he is negotiating development matters with a trust fund. Amid the chaos, his two daughters also cause him concern: the youngest, Scottie (Amara Miller), frequently swears at her classmates, forcing Matt to personally apologize; the eldest, Alexandra (Shailene Woodley), is living at a boarding school and drinking heavily, and with their mother critically ill, Matt hopes Alexandra will let go of her hostility towards her mother. However, Alexandra reveals the reason for their estrangement—she discovered her mother’s infidelity. This completely shatters the image of his wife in Matt's mind. He goes to seek confirmation from his wife's best friend, and the answer is the same. Matt, who has been kept in the dark, feels both disappointed and angry, and he begins to team up with his daughter to trace the other party... This film won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 84th Academy Awards.
