A historical opera film; it depicts the renowned drama "Dou E Yuan" created by Yuan Dynasty playwright Guan Hanqing, criticizing corruption and exposing the wrongdoings of greedy officials, who are harmed by the emperor's favorites. The story of the struggle in a death cell celebrates Guan Hanqing's indomitable fighting spirit. The main plot is as follows: Corruption runs rampant in the Yuan Dynasty. Guan Hanqing witnesses the unjust death of a young widow, Zhu Xiaolan, and, with the support and encouragement of the singer Zhu Lianxiu, he adapts this case into the zaju "Dou E Yuan," where Zhu Lianxiu plays the role of Dou E, condemning the evils of corrupt officials. The emperor's favorite, Ahema, orders a rewrite of the script, but Guan Hanqing firmly refuses, and he and Zhu Lianxiu are thrown into a death cell. They do not yield; Guan Hanqing composes "Die Shuang Fei" in prison to gift to Zhu Lianxiu, expressing his unwavering spirit and loyal love.
