Two young men from Hong Kong, Tan Yinglun and Wang Houwei, have chosen traditional Cantonese opera as their career, aspiring to become rare male dan performers in the Cantonese opera scene. With a passion that others cannot understand, they face family, industry, and societal misunderstanding and pressure as they follow their determined path in male dan performance. From two cherished friends who learned to portray female roles together, they have evolved into a great onstage pair, telling touching stories of love between male and female characters in Cantonese opera. In Hong Kong, aiming for a career in the arts has always been a challenging path, unrealistic and often lacking a clear future. When you know that the road ahead leads to nowhere, will you still choose to continue? If we know a path leads to nowhere, without proof of success, will we still choose it? Historically, Cantonese Opera has never had an iconic dan (a female lead role typically played by male actors). However, with the success of Ren Jianhui, female actresses taking on traditional male dan roles have become the norm and the trend in Cantonese Opera. Two young Cantonese men captivated by male dan, Tan Yinglun and Wang Houwei, are changing these trends. With time and perseverance, will they be able to defy tradition or buck the mainstream? If Mei Lanfang (a famous dan performer of Peking Opera) had been a Cantonese Opera dan, could that have paved the way for them?
