The young Austrian Queen Sisi (played by Romy Schneider) travels extensively in Hungary, feeling the people's unpolitical enthusiasm for her. She deeply falls in love with this country and its people, which is also the only way for her to escape the pressures of life in the Viennese royal court. However, while she is in Hungary soothing the reluctant nobles with Count Andrássy, the Empress Sophie (played by Vilma Degischer) starts spreading rumors about Sisi and the count. Franz (played by Karlheinz Böhm) remains focused on state affairs, allowing his mother Sophie to interfere in political matters, including issues regarding their daughter’s upbringing. When Sisi is diagnosed with severe tuberculosis, Franz even complies with his mother's wishes by allowing the doctor to take their daughter away from Sisi. Sisi is sent to a distant island to recuperate, and in her solitude and helplessness, she gradually recovers under her mother's careful nurturing. After Sisi's recovery, she accompanies Franz on a visit to northern Italy. There, nationalists strongly oppose Austrian rule and show significant hostility towards the royal family. However, when Sisi reunites with her daughter in St. Mark's Square, the people of Italy are touched by the kind-hearted Sisi, and they warmly welcome the reunion of mother and daughter.
