1965 was the era of Martin Luther King, the Black Panthers, the Beatles, the Vietnam War, and white dominance in basketball. High school girls' basketball coach Don Haskins (played by Josh Lucas) receives a job offer from Texas Western College. Although the salary is low—his family can only temporarily stay in the men's dorm and the board's funding is insufficient to recruit high-level athletes—Haskins accepts the position since he will be coaching a team in the NCAA Championship's first division and immediately begins an extensive search for black players. The coaching staff gradually discovers seven exceptionally talented black players, each with distinctive personalities and strengths. After a heated showdown, the black and white players quickly bond and commit to Haskins' rigorous training. The occasional rule-breaking by the players and differences in basketball philosophies lead to mutual growth for both the coach and the players... Finally, the moment for the season to begin arrives. The Texas Western team surges forward, facing the violent threats of racists and the disdain of some public opinion. Coach Haskins decides to push together with his black players toward the peak of the glory road...
