In an old apartment in Tokyo, there lives a chubby painter named Tatsuya Fukuda (played by Miyuki Oshima). He is plain in appearance but optimistic and reliable among his colleagues at work. In the apartment, he mediates disputes between his snake-keeping neighbor, Mayama, and a young man with a past of theft. However, Fukuda has a fatal flaw: he is not good at dealing with women. His friend Takuji Shimaki (played by Yoshiyoshi Arakawa) constantly worries about Fukuda's love life and tries to introduce him to potential partners. Troubled, Fukuda gets into arguments with his friend and deliberately ignores the dating girls during their meetings.
