Salust (Louis de Funès) is a rude, greedy Spanish nobleman who enjoys flattery but is also harsh and uncaring. His servant is poor yet kind. Due to a court conspiracy, Salust loses his privileges, which fuels his desire for revenge. Meanwhile, his servant falls in love with the German queen, providing Salust with an opportunity...This film is a major work from Funès following "The Great Escape," featuring the second male lead played by French actor Yves Montand, and directed by the renowned French comedy genius Pierre-Ursule (who also wrote "The Great Escape" and helped make Funès a star)... Funès excels at portraying satirical roles of greedy and status-driven characters, making this film highly enjoyable. Unlike other comedies on similar themes, this film incorporates surrealist creative techniques, classifying it as a surreal comedy/drama. If you appreciate Spanish court noble culture, Renaissance architecture, medieval inquisitions, various ceremonies, flamenco dancing, knights, deserts... and Funès’s performance style, you shouldn't miss this exceptionally traditional and authentic classic French comedy.
