A university professor living in Kamakura, Soju Sugiyama (played by Chishu Ryu) lost his wife early on and relies on his daughter, Keiko (played by Setsuko Hara), for companionship. From a young age, Keiko has taken on the heavy responsibilities of the household, caring for her father's daily life. In the blink of an eye, Keiko has turned twenty-seven and remains unmarried. Her aunt (played by Haruko Sugimura) and friend (played by Yumeji Tsukioka) are both concerned about her marriage prospects, but she is unwilling to discuss marriage due to her attachment to her father. Soon, her aunt introduces a single woman, Akiko Miwa (played by Kuniko Miyake), to Soju, who willingly agrees. Keiko feels an immense sense of melancholy upon hearing this news...
