The story takes place in England in the 1950s, where Lydia (played by Holliday Grainger) is a very ordinary housewife living there. After being ruthlessly abandoned by her husband, Lydia, left with no choice, begins a struggling life with her son Charlie. Due to family circumstances, Charlie suffers bullying at school, and the mother and son repeatedly find themselves in dire situations. Just when they are at their most desperate, a doctor named Jane (played by Anna Paquin) moves in next door to Lydia. Jane is gentle and kind; she not only heals Charlie's wounds but also opens her home to them when Lydia and Charlie face the fate of becoming homeless. Thus, Lydia moves into Jane's house, and over time, a different kind of bond develops between them, while gossip about their relationship spreads wildly throughout the small village.
