Chekhov (Boris Chirkov), Rabin (Aleksandr Bashirov), and Nestratov (Vasili Merkuryev) are childhood friends who share a strong bond. As they grow up, they take different paths: Chekhov becomes a renowned surgeon, Rabin an expert in animal husbandry, while Nestratov achieves the most success, becoming the head of a construction management bureau. They have always wanted to fulfill their childhood dream of traveling along the river, and they finally manage to contact the high-flying Nestratov. However, when they bring him to their means of transportation—a rickety wooden raft—it leaves Nestratov shocked!
