In 1939, Germany invaded Poland with a lightning war, quickly occupying most of the country. The beautiful and kind Antonina and her husband, Dr. Jan Żabiński, who operated a zoo, suffered heavy losses from the German bombings and faced the risk of closure. As the German forces advanced, the Jewish population in Poland was driven out. Antonina, unable to bear her friends' plight, discussed with Jan the idea of hiding them in the zoo. After witnessing the tragic fates of many Jews, Jan decided to use the zoo as a temporary refuge for them. The couple sought help from their old friend, Lutz Heck, a German officer. As a zoologist, Heck was also eager to use the zoo's American bison to attempt to breed the already extinct European bison and gladly agreed to their idea of converting the zoo into a pig farm under the pretense of providing pork to the Germans. Jan managed to save batch after batch of Jews by transporting fodder from the Jewish ghetto. Antonina housed these Jews in the empty animal enclosures, and each night, they would come out of the darkness to dine and talk together. As the war escalated, patriot Jan joined the Warsaw resistance and was wounded and captured in battle, leaving his fate unknown. Alone and fragile, Antonina raised their two children while sheltering the Jews. When the war ended, Antonina and Jan returned to the zoo to rebuild their home with their friends.
