Billy (Dennis Hopper) and Wyatt (Peter Fonda) hit the road on their motorcycles with money from a drug deal, heading to the Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Along the way, they pass through a secluded Bohemian settlement and witness their free-spirited yet impoverished lifestyle during a brief stay. In Texas, they are arrested by the police merely for their strange behavior, where they meet lawyer George Hanson (Jack Nicholson), who helps them escape from jail. They encourage Hanson to join them on the road. Unable to resist his inner restlessness, Hanson agrees. The trio arrives in a conservative town where they become the target of scorn from the locals. Unwelcome, they are forced to sleep in the wilderness, and at night, residents disguised as attackers kill Hanson. Although shocked, Billy and Wyatt continue on their journey. Upon reaching their destination, they find no joy, only an endless void, leading them to head back home. Unexpectedly, their journey is abruptly halted by a truck driver with a double-barrel shotgun. This is one of the greatest road movies in film history and a progenitor of many subsequent road films.
