The film features a large number of non-professional actors, and the story is built on the real lives of the performers. Beyond realism, the director incorporates many magical surreal and absurd elements, such as a Russian blue cat appearing at night, a rocket slowly ascending, filled with various hints and meanings, complemented by magnificent lakes and village scenery that resembles paradise on earth, making the movie rich in poetry and tranquility, celebrated as the biggest surprise of the Venice Film Festival that year. A postman navigating a speedboat across the lake on a remote island in northern Russia serves as the only link between the villagers and the outside world. Although civilization is just across the lake, the villagers maintain a simple, self-sufficient lifestyle, devoid of government institutions, social assistance, or employment needs. The postman becomes their sole bridge to the outside world. Every day, he delivers letters to every household, chatting with different villagers. He cares for an elderly, solitary, alcoholic man and secretly loves the widow Irina, often looking after her son. However, Irina chooses to take her son to the city for work, and the speedboat's engine has been stolen, rendering it inoperable. His existence and meaning in life are disrupted... The film's director won the Best Director award at the 71st Venice Film Festival.
