Ding Xiaoya, a female welder and model worker from the Shanghai Jiangbin Shipyard, goes to a southern sanatorium for recuperation. However, she is concerned about her work and fears being distanced from her colleagues, so she leaves the sanatorium the next day. Ding Xiaoya's actions attract the attention of reporter Shu Lang. Shu Lang returns to Shanghai after many years, where his childhood village, Changle, has undergone many changes. He unexpectedly discovers that Ding Xiaoya is a close friend of his sister, Shu Xiuyun. Ding Xiaoya plans to bring gifts to attend her colleague Zhu Lifang's wedding but finds out that she was not invited because she is a model worker. Among the neighbors, another uninvited guest is Du Hai, a young man who had previously been a work-study student. The village of Changle is immersed in joy, while Ding Xiaoya and Du Hai feel particularly isolated. The next morning, with everyone still not at work, Ding Xiaoya is already fully engaged in her work, forgetting the coldness of those around her. However, group leader Chen Jingen and Zhu Lifang continue to mock her, which raises Shu Lang's concern and reflection. During a hull joint occurrence, a high crane malfunctions, and Ding Xiaoya seeks help from the power workshop. The guys there challenge her to an arm wrestle, claiming that whoever she beats will help her fix the crane. Du Hai intentionally loses to Ding Xiaoya and then takes another worker, Heizi, up to the hundred-ton crane. An accident occurs with the crane, and Du Hai heroically saves Heizi, but due to his "history," he experiences unfair treatment. Ding Xiaoya sympathizes with him and understands him better. Shu Lang enthusiastically helps Ding Xiaoya, hoping she can withstand the pressure around her and escape her loneliness. At the same time, he realizes he has developed feelings for Ding Xiaoya. Group leader Chen Jingen, angry that Ding Xiaoya rejected his unreasonable demands, deliberately makes her work at heights on a windy day, resulting in her falling from the bow of the ship and being hospitalized. This accident strikes a chord with everyone in the group. Chen Jingen comes to the factory alone during his time off to continue Ding Xiaoya's work. Shu Lang expresses his affection for Ding Xiaoya when she recovers, but she politely declines. A fire breaks out in Changle Village, and Du Hai, Shu Lang, and others work hard to save it. After the fire is extinguished, Zhu Lifang discovers that her recorder is missing and suspects Du Hai. Shu Lang defends Du Hai, but she still does not believe him. The truth finally comes to light, and Du Hai’s actions deeply move the people of Changle Village. Ding Xiaoya holds Shu Lang's hand tightly, thanking him for testifying for Du Hai at a crucial moment, realizing that her true affection is for Du Hai. One evening, after completing his interview, Shu Lang prepares to return to Beijing. He bids farewell to the people of Changle Village, taking with him insights and reflections on life. After helping Zhu Lifang finish building her house, Du Hai, exhausted, walks home and finds Ding Xiaoya cooking for him. They exchange silent glances, and Du Hai slowly approaches Ding Xiaoya... The film strives to depict tangible, lively, and flesh-and-blood characters who reflect the challenges faced by contemporary youth in their lives, authentically showcasing their joys and sorrows, pursuits and aspirations, and through their experiences and struggles to change their circumstances, it conveys the creators' attitudes and views towards society and life.
