The story takes place in 1960s America, where Llewyn Davis (played by Oscar Isaac) is an obscure folk singer. Living a difficult life, he is homeless and lacks a steady job, relying on the charity of friends to find a place to stay each night. However, despite his predicament, the obstinate Llewyn refuses to conform to popular preferences and make reluctant changes. Because of this, his relationships with longtime friends Jean (played by Carey Mulligan) and Jim (played by Justin Timberlake) have reached a breaking point. To make matters worse, Llewyn discovers that Jean is pregnant with his child. Afterward, Llewyn goes to Chicago in search of a job, but after an unsuccessful interview, he returns to Greenwich Village and resumes working at a small tavern where he once had a part-time job. The familiar surroundings, music, and atmosphere remind Llewyn of his experiences, yet it feels as though nothing has changed.
