In Tokyo Bianliang, the 800,000 guards' instructor Lin Chong (played by Li Shaochun) accompanies his wife Zhang (played by Du Jinfang) to the East Yue Temple to burn incense and fulfill a vow. They encounter the treacherous minister Gao Qiao's (played by Su Weiming) son Gao Yanei (played by Sun Shengwu), who, infatuated with Zhang's beauty, leads a group of ruffians to tease her. Lin Chong, furious, reprimands Gao Yanei for his lack of virtue. Fearing Lin Chong's reputation as an instructor, Gao Yanei departs sullenly. During this time, they meet Lu Zhishen (played by Yuan Shihai), who has just returned from Wutai Mountain. Knowing Lin Chong is the instructor of the guards, Lu offers to spar a few rounds, and they quickly become sworn brothers.
