A work adapted by Yoko Mizuki from the eponymous novel by the representative author of naturalism, Akisei Tokuda, and directed by Mikio Naruse. It portrays a woman, born with a fiery temperament yet easily swayed by emotions, who continues to live despite being abandoned by men one after another, observed from a distance. Naruse is well-known for depicting strong women, but a heroine who expressively reveals her emotions so wildly throughout is rare. The lead actress, Hideko Takamine, who boasts an exquisite partnership with Naruse, performs with a physicality that embodies her strong will, infusing the somewhat monochrome protagonist with vibrancy, leaving a different flavor compared to her detailed performances in other works. The sounds of street vendors and clacking wooden sticks create a rich auditory expression.
