The story takes place during World War II, where British soldier Eric (played by Colin Firth) is captured by Japanese forces and taken to work on the Thailand-Burma Railway. Eric secretly hides a radio, and by listening to broadcasts, he learns that Japan is already on the brink of defeat in the war and won't last much longer. He and his comrades rely on this small comfort and hope to survive. Eventually, Eric's secret is discovered by the Japanese soldiers, who subject him to inhumane torture, causing him immense psychological trauma that continues to affect his life even thirty years after the war when he starts his own family. One day, Eric learns that one of the officers who tortured him, named Takashi Nagase (played by Hiroyuki Sanada), is still alive, and he decides to pay him a visit.
