During the Cold War, the two major intelligence organizations in the world—Russia's "Center" and Britain's "Circus"—were engaged in a covert struggle. When an agent is killed, the higher-ups are furious and order the "Circus" to root out the "mole." There are five suspects identified, named by the former head of the Circus: the carpenter, the tailor, the soldier, the poor man, and the beggar. Among them, the retired "beggar" George Smiley (played by Gary Oldman) is a prime suspect. One day, Peter Guillam (played by Benedict Cumberbatch), head of the operation group known as the scalps, and intelligence director Lacon of the UK Cabinet Office rule out Smiley as a suspect, bringing him back to uncover the "mole." Smiley then begins to visit old acquaintances and investigate the Circus's former leader Alleline, the tailor Bill Haydon (played by Colin Firth), the soldier, senior spy responsible for Eastern European affairs Roy Bland, and the poor man, Toby Esterhase, head of the logistics department's streetlight group. Tensions rise within the Circus as suspicions abound—who is the "mole"…… The film is adapted from John le Carré's novel of the same name. The title comes from the English folk collection "Mother Goose Rhymes."
