The lewd and unattractive Ah Q (played by Yan Shunkai) is a small character in Weizhuang who survives by doing odd jobs. His family is destitute, so poor that they don't even have a surname. Despite this, Ah Q always feels good about himself, either looking down on pretentious foreigners or trying to curry favor with the landlord Zhao Taiye. Of course, the result is often not respect, but disdain or even beatings. Luckily, Ah Q has a set of self-comforting "spiritual victory methods," so even though he suffers physically, he ultimately finds satisfaction spiritually. After being beaten by Zhao Taiye and punished for teasing Wu Ma, Ah Q's life becomes increasingly difficult. Out of desperation, he goes to the city in search of a way to survive. A series of misunderstandings surprisingly leads Ah Q to be seen by the people of Weizhuang as a powerful revolutionary, and this small character who has been oppressed for half his life finally gets to stand tall, if only for a while... This film is adapted from the novella by Lu Xun and won the Best Actor award at the 2nd Swiss International Comedy Film Festival.
