On a night in 1920s Shanghai, young worker Zhao Zhilong is killed by the Nationalist military police for participating in a strike, turning the bridal chamber into a mourning hall. His newlywed wife, A-Ying, is devastated. However, A-Ying worries even more about her junior, A-Long, who is fierce by nature and harbors a deep hatred for evil—how could he remain indifferent to his senior's tragic death? A-Long indeed rushes back to Shanghai from elsewhere, swearing to avenge his senior. Driven by extreme revenge, he successively assassinates the lieutenant colonel director of the Nationalist garrison and a Qing gang henchman, Xie Laowu, and thus finds himself pursued by the police. During a fierce battle, A-Long is unfortunate enough to be injured, but sister-in-law A-Ying cleverly deceives the checkpoints and rescues him. However, the police have laid plans for a more meticulous manhunt. Fortunately, a friend, Yu Ziqing, timely informs them, and they escape from the tiger's mouth, seeking refuge at the home of Uncle Ning Yuwu in Shaoxing. After A-Long's repeated requests, Uncle Ning asks Liu Yunfu to take him back to Shanghai for revenge on his senior brother. As soon as they arrive at the dock, they are discovered by the Qing gang leader Yang Caichen. The Qing gang colludes with warlords, first creating internal rifts, and then plotting schemes to frame others. While A-Long is struggling with heavy labor, Yang Caichen secretly hides firearms in a rice bag, causing A-Long to be charged with "smuggling weapons" and thrown into prison… A-Long is determined for revenge, but Liu Yunfu is bribed by the Qing gang. The father and son secretly operate a smokehouse and brothel, engaging in heinous activities. A-Long angrily smashes the brothel, leading to a standoff with the Liu family. A-Ying, who is deeply connected to A-Long’s fate, is defiled by Liu Yunfu's son. Filled with humiliation and anger, she dies with resentment. A-Long is heartbroken. The treacherous Yang Caichen then casts bait towards Yu Ziqing, who was once A-Long's companion in adversity. Seizing the opportunity amid the internal collapse, he betrays A-Long and joins the Qing gang. A-Long comes to Shanghai with high hopes to seize the dock but returns empty-handed and ultimately meets a tragic end at the hands of Yu Ziqing. Six months later, Liu Yunfu's daughter Liu Yaqin, who had steadfastly pursued A-Long despite repeated rejections, leaves Shanghai with A-Long’s orphan, Ning Xiaolong, to seek a new life elsewhere.
