Howard (Will Smith) is a successful advertising agency manager who has been married to his wife Amy (Keira Knightley) for many years, and they raise a lovely little daughter together. An accident takes the little girl's life, leading to the shattering of this happy family, and Amy chooses to leave Howard. The successive blows plunge Howard into despair, leaving him unable to focus on company matters as he spends his days writing letters addressed to "Love," "Time," and "Death." The company's competitors approach Howard with the hope of acquiring his advertising company, which would mean a significant financial windfall for everyone in the firm, but Howard rejects this offer, remaining immersed in his letter writing. Howard's decision angers several colleagues at the company, who decide to join forces to concoct a conspiracy to prove that their boss has gone mad.
