The story takes place during World War II, where American officer Ryan (played by Frank Sinatra) becomes a prisoner of the German army and is held in a prisoner-of-war camp located in Italy. In addition to Ryan, there are over six hundred British prisoners of war confined here. Ryan's intelligence and kindness quickly earn him the admiration of the other prisoners, and he becomes the de facto "leader" of the camp. Life in the camp is filled with suffering and oppression. As time goes on, the prisoners begin to contemplate the idea of escape for survival. However, the German guards are on high alert, making it exceedingly difficult to break free. The prisoners place their hopes and expectations on Ryan. With the weight of their trust on his shoulders, can Ryan complete this nearly impossible task? They know that if the plan fails, there is only one outcome awaiting them: death.
