Zaxi and Yangjin are together day and night, deeply in love. One day, the landowner Madam Zhuma is riding for leisure when her horse is startled and suddenly bolts. In a critical moment, Zaxi bravely saves Madam Zhuma. As a reward, Zhuma agrees to let Zaxi marry Yangjin after he pays off her debt. However, Rangsé, a lama, attempts to seize Yangjin; he gouges out Zaxi's left eye, claiming their union violates divine will. Yangjin vows never to submit to Rangsé and is thrown into the Yarlung Tsangpo River, leaving behind a pair of twin daughters born shortly after: the elder named Dawa and the younger named Nima. To conceal this from their master, Zaxi raises them under the name "Uncle." In 1957, a small group of upper-class reactionaries in Tibet plans a rebellion, and by then, Dawa and Nima are already eighteen. They discover weapons smuggled by Zhuma from abroad on the route. When they go to report to the People's Liberation Army, Rangsé kills Dawa. The rebellion is suppressed in 1959. Two years later, Nima, who had joined the People's Liberation Army, returns to her hometown with the work team. Under the leadership of the work team, the slaves rise up, and Madam Zhuma and Rangsé face the punishment they deserve. Zaxi and Nima are reunited, and the generations of slaves who toiled have truly risen up.
