The little boy Hugo (Asa Butterfield) is a natural mechanic. He lives in the bell tower of a Paris train station and occasionally sneaks into a toy store to steal parts to repair the robot left by his father (Jude Law). During one of his thefts, he is caught by the shop owner Georges Méliès (Ben Kingsley), and out of fear of a patrolling policeman with a hound (Sacha Baron Cohen), he has to give in. Georges takes away his father's relic—a mechanical manual, which makes Hugo anxious. He follows Georges to his home and meets his adoptive daughter Isabelle (Chloë Moretz), pleading with her to help him keep the manual. Isabelle finds this suspicious, so the two team up to investigate. The robot they repaired signs its artwork with Georges' name, raising their suspicions. Eventually, they discover a mysterious cabinet in Georges' home filled with paintings, and they find out about Georges' identity in film books at the library. The appearance of an informant adds more mystery to their fantastical adventure...This film is adapted from Brian Selznick's novel of the same name and is Martin Scorsese's first 3D effort.
